Cairns Boat Cruises – 90-minute Sunset Inlet River Cruise

A sunset cruise in Cairns means an evening on Trinity Inlet, with the city lights coming on behind the mangroves, and I found three of them. I compared them from $53 to $96, and each also appears in my full list of boat tours in Cairns. Prices are in US dollars, checked in October 2026, and the booking links are affiliate links, as I explain on my about page.

My pick is the Bad Fishy 90-minute sunset inlet cruise at $53, rated 4.6 from 245 reviews. If you want something with more meaning than a drink and a view, I’d choose the Mandingalbay sunset cruise at $69, which has no reviews yet but visits an Indigenous Protected Area.

Sunset Cruise Cairns Australia

Cairns sunset times change by about an hour across the year, and the cruise should follow them. These are sunset times for the 15th of each month, from sunrise-sunset.org, in local time (Cairns has no daylight saving).

Month Sunset Month Sunset
January 6:58 pm July 6:00 pm
February 6:51 pm August 6:08 pm
March 6:33 pm September 6:13 pm
April 6:09 pm October 6:17 pm
May 5:54 pm November 6:29 pm
June 5:52 pm December 6:46 pm

The listings do not state fixed start times for the Bad Fishy cruises, so I’d check the departure time on the booking page for your date, and choose a time that puts the sunset in the middle of the 90 minutes. The Mandingalbay guides meet you at about 5:15 pm, and the listing says the sunset is the last 30 minutes of a 2 hour trip, so ask the operator how the start time shifts with the season.

Sunset Sail Cairns

I did not find a sunset sail among my three sunset cruises. All three are motor boats on Trinity Inlet. The only sailing boat in my Cairns list is the Spirit of Cairns catamaran, which runs a dinner cruise from 6:15 pm, and in the months from October to March that departure is at or before the sunset. That trip is on my dinner cruise page, where I show the sunset against the departure for every month, and it is the closest thing to a sail at dusk.

Cairns Sunset River Cruise

The Cairns sunset river cruise from Bad Fishy is a Trinity Inlet cruise of 90 minutes. The listing says you drift along the tranquil inlet, spot wildlife winding down for the evening, and watch Cairns turn from sunny bustle to tropical twilight. It includes the captain, a complimentary beer, wine or soft drink, and a light snack. Hotel pick-up is not provided, and you make your own way to Berth A1 at the marina.

The package at $96 adds the 75-minute Cairns Inlet River Cruise earlier in the day. You pay $43 more than the sunset cruise on its own, which gets you the second cruise. I’d only book it if you’d take both cruises separately, and my river cruise page lists the 75-minute cruise by itself at $44, so the package saves about $1.

Best Sunset Cruise Cairns

For the best sunset cruise in Cairns, I compare on what you get, not on star ratings, because two of the three have no reviews yet. The Bad Fishy cruise has the evidence: 4.6 from 245 reviews, and one reviewer called it a relaxing cruise at sunset and a perfect way to enjoy pre-dinner drinks and get the sunset shot. The Mandingalbay cruise has the story.

Cruise Operator Price Duration Boat Rating Cancellation
90-minute sunset inlet cruise Bad Fishy Jet Boating $53 1.5 hours Skippered boat 4.6 (245) Free, 24 hours
Sunset cruise with Indigenous culture Mandingalbay Authentic Indigenous Tours $69 2 hours River cruise vessel None yet Free, 24 hours
Inlet and sunset cruise, 2 tours Bad Fishy Jet Boating $96 3 hours Skippered boat None yet Free, 24 hours

The Mandingalbay itinerary is a 20 minute cruise from Cairns Harbour, a 30 minute visit at East Trinity, and 30 minutes of sunset on the way back. It is led by Mandingalbay Yidinji guides, with a Welcome to Country using ochre, a cultural presentation, non-alcoholic drinks and light canapes, and spotlighting for crocodiles, sleeping birds and jumping fish after dark.

What You See on a Cairns Sunset Cruise

On a Cairns sunset cruise from the marina you see the city skyline from the water, then the mangrove-lined creeks of Trinity Inlet as the light drops. The shorter Bad Fishy listing describes panoramic views of the skyline framed by lush mangroves and distant mountains, and the sunset listing promises golden-hour glow and wildlife winding down for the evening. The Mandingalbay trip goes up the inlet to the East Trinity wetlands and mangrove forests, stops at the Stingray (Yulu) Shelter for the welcome, and returns into Cairns Harbour to see the lights of a tropical city at night.

For a sense of scale, East Trinity is a short boat ride and a 30 minute stop in the itinerary, and the marina is only 0.34 km from the Esplanade Lagoon, so you can add an early evening walk along the waterfront before you board.

Sunset Cruise Cairns Price Compared

At $53 for 90 minutes, the Bad Fishy cruise works out at about $35 an hour, including a drink and a snack. The Mandingalbay cruise is $69 for 2 hours, about $35 an hour as well, with canapes and a cultural visit. The package is $96 for 3 hours, about $32 an hour. So the best sunset cruise in Cairns on price is almost a three-way tie, and the decision comes down to what you want from the evening. If you simply want a view, take the $53 option. If you want a guide from the Mandingalbay Yidinji people and a walk ashore, pay $16 more.

Private Sunset Cruise Cairns

I found no private sunset cruise in my Cairns list, and none of the three sunset options is offered as a private charter in the text I have. If you want the boat to yourselves, the self-drive boats on my boat rental page are the nearest option, but their listings do not promise an evening slot, so ask Cairns Boat Hire before you plan a sunset with them.

For a small group, a Bad Fishy cruise with a skipper is the least crowded choice I can name from the data, but I do not know the size of the boat, so I can’t promise that. The Mandingalbay listing says guides want to create a safe space for guests, which suits a small group, but it does not state a limit.

Cairns Sunset Cruise and Dinner

If you want dinner after the sunset, there is no combined sunset and dinner cruise in my list. The simplest plan is a sunset cruise first and then a table in town, or the Spirit of Cairns buffet cruise on a different night. My dinner cruise page compares the two dinner options, from $100.

What to Know Before You Book a Cairns Sunset Cruise

The stinger season matters if you plan to swim around your evening. The Queensland Government dates it as November to May, and says stingers are present in tropical Queensland waters all year; see its page on dangerous marine life. On a cruise you stay in the boat. The listings place saltwater crocodiles in the inlet’s creeks, so I’d follow the crew’s instructions about arms and hands.

The sunset listing mentions a warm ocean breeze, so I’d bring a light layer and a camera. I’d choose a cruise on a clear forecast, but I can’t predict the weather for you.

How I’d Choose a Cairns Sunset Cruise

Whichever sunset cruise in Cairns you choose, take free cancellation and arrive at the marina early. To see more of the water by day, my snorkeling page covers the reef and my fishing charter page covers the inlet. For every Cairns boat trip I compared, go back to boat tours in Cairns, or to my home page for other cities.
