Cairns Boat Trips – Great Barrier Reef Fishing Charter with Lunch

A fishing charter in Cairns can mean two very different days. One goes 90 minutes offshore to the Great Barrier Reef for coral trout and red emperor, and the other stays in the mangroves of Trinity Inlet for barramundi and mangrove jack. I compared 3 Cairns fishing trips, from $104 to $273, and all three also appear in my full list of boat tours in Cairns. Prices are in US dollars, checked in October 2026, and the booking links are affiliate links, as I explain on my about page.

My pick for a serious day is the Cairns Reef Fishing charter at $273. For a short morning I’d choose the Fish Tales estuary charter at $104. The reef trip has 4.3 from 39 reviews and the estuary trip 4.6 from 22, so both samples are small and I’d read the recent reviews before booking.

Fishing Charter Cairns Australia

A fishing charter in Cairns, Australia, is sold on GetYourGuide as three products, and they are not interchangeable. The reef charter is a guided offshore day. The estuary charter is a guided morning with an experienced fishing guide. The pontoon is a boat you drive yourself, with a skipper available at $50 an hour if you would rather not.

For most visitors who have never fished the reef, I’d pick the reef fishing charter in Cairns, because the species it lists, coral trout, red emperor and large mouth nannygai, are what people come to Queensland for. If you already have a day on the reef planned with a snorkelling trip, the estuary morning fits the other half of a trip nicely.

Fishing Trips Cairns

The reef trip, the first of the Cairns fishing charters I list, leaves early. Check-in begins at 6:00 AM sharp at The Pier Cafe, inside The Pier Shopping Centre on Pier Point Road. The boat travels about 90 minutes offshore to grounds within a 50 km radius of Cairns, and the crew picks the spot based on conditions on the day. The listing says there are thousands of fishing marks built up over decades and that catches of 10 kg or more are possible.

Everything for fishing is supplied: rods and reels, tackle and bait. The price includes all reef taxes, a buffet lunch, afternoon tea, bottled water, alcohol and soft drinks. The crew cleans, chills and packs your catch. Cancel up to 24 hours before for a full refund.

Fishing Tours Cairns

Cairns fishing tours on the estuary use Trinity Inlet, which the Fish Tales listing describes as a State Marine Park with deep holes, mudflats, snags and drop-offs, and over 100 km of waterways. It lists fingermark, mangrove jack, gold-spotted and black-spotted estuary cod, grunter, threadfin, queenfish, trevally, bream, tarpon, jewfish and mud crabs, and calls barramundi every Cairns fisherman’s dream. It adds that species depend on the season.

The trip runs 4.5 hours and meets at 6:30 am on Finger D, Berth 2, in front of The Pier Shopping. The price covers rods with PENN SLAMMER reels, dead and live bait, tackle, cooled bottled water, an esky with ice and an experienced fishing guide. No food is included, so I’d bring breakfast and a hat. The trip is near the city, which is the main reason I’d choose it over the reef when the weather is rough, but I can’t forecast sea conditions for you.

Cairns Fishing Charters

Here is how the three Cairns fishing charters compare on the data.

Trip Operator Price Duration Boat Rating Cancellation
Reef fishing with lunch Cairns Reef Fishing $273 9 hours Offshore charter boat 4.3 (39) Free, 24 hours
Morning estuary charter Fish Tales Charters $104 4.5 hours Guided river boat 4.6 (22) Free, 24 hours
Pontoon with optional BBQ Cairns Boat Hire $172 4 to 8 hours 8-person pontoon, self-drive 4.8 (8) Free, 24 hours

Per hour, the reef day works out at about $30 and the estuary morning at about $23. The pontoon price is for the boat, not per person, so it is the cheapest per head if you fill all 8 places, but you carry the work.

Cairns Fishing Trips

The pontoon is a different idea of a fishing trip. Cairns Boat Hire gives you an 8-person pontoon with a shaded canopy, life jackets and fuel, plus a safety briefing and tips on the best fishing spots based on the tides and time of day. Rods and bait can be hired. A BBQ can be hired too, and BBQ packs can be bought with a minimum of 24 hours notice.

You collect the boat from Berth A1 at the Marlin Marina and cruise Trinity Inlet at your own pace. No marine licence is required to drive, but the driver must be 18 or older and hold a valid driver’s licence. The listing excludes wheelchair users. It has 4.8 from 8 reviews, which is too few for me to call it proven. If fishing is a side idea and the family wants a day out, I’d choose this one. If catching fish is the point, I’d pay for a guide.

Cairns Fishing Tours

Before you choose among Cairns fishing tours or any other fishing charter in Cairns, check three things. First, the start time: 6:00 AM for the reef, 6:30 am for the estuary. Second, what you eat: lunch is included on the reef only. Third, the rules: none of the listings gives size or bag limits in the text I have, so ask the crew what applies on the day.

There is a Cairns tinny hire too, which I compare on my boat rental page. It is a smaller boat for 4 people and a cheaper way to fish Trinity Inlet if you already own the tackle. For a calmer day on the same water without a rod, my river cruise page lists the inlet cruises, and my snorkeling page covers the reef for swimmers.

What to Bring on a Cairns Fishing Charter

On a fishing charter in Cairns the reef boat includes drinks and lunch, so you mainly need sun protection and something for the crossing; the listing says the trip travels about 90 minutes offshore, and I can’t predict the sea state for you. On the estuary charter, bring your own food, because none is included, and keep in mind that the inlet is a crocodile habitat. The inlet cruise listings mention saltwater crocodiles in the creeks, so I’d keep hands and feet inside the boat whenever the crew tells you to.

On the pontoon, you supply the food and drink. The tinny and pontoon listings say bait, ice and an esky can be hired or bought at extra cost, so ask when you collect the boat. The meeting point for both hire boats and for the Fish Tales charter is the Marlin Marina, within walking distance of The Pier, so I’d arrive early enough to find your finger and berth.

How I’d Choose a Cairns Fishing Charter

These Cairns fishing charters cover three budgets, so I match the charter to the day you have.

Whichever charter you book, take free cancellation and ask about the forecast. For the whole list of Cairns boat trips, go back to boat tours in Cairns or to my home page for other cities. If you prefer to see the water in the evening, my sunset cruise page and dinner cruise page cover it.
