Snorkeling in Cairns means a boat trip to the Great Barrier Reef, because the reef sits well offshore and every trip I compared travels 75 to 90 minutes to reach it. I compared 3 Cairns snorkeling trips, from $124 to $200, and each also appears in my full list of boat tours in Cairns. Prices are in US dollars, checked in October 2026, and the booking links are affiliate links, as I explain on my about page.
My pick for snorkeling in Cairns is the Ocean Free and Ocean Freedom cruise: $200, 8.5 hours, rated 4.8 from 1,633 reviews. If you only have half a day, I’d choose the Reef Adventures half-day tour at $124, rated 4.7 from 1,984 reviews.

Snorkeling Cairns Australia
Snorkeling in Cairns, Australia, is a day of boat time with a swim in the middle, and the three listings differ mostly in how much of the day is in the water. Reef Adventures sells the shortest version: a fast boat from Cairns Marlin Marina, Finger B, with 1.5 hours of guided snorkelling at one of 2 reefs. Ocean Free and Ocean Freedom sells the longest: a catamaran from the Reef Fleet Terminal, with two reef sites and 6 hours on the Great Barrier Reef. Divers Den sits between them with the vessel AquaQuest from B Finger.
None of the three lets you skip the sea crossing, so I’d think about how you cope with boats before price. The Reef Adventures listing even lists people prone to seasickness among those it is not suitable for. The reef itself is managed by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority, and the Ocean Free listing says both of its sites are in highly protected Green zones.
Snorkeling Trip Cairns
A snorkeling trip in Cairns starts early. Reef Adventures asks you to meet the crew 30 minutes before departure at its office on Finger B and says there are 3 departures a day. Divers Den has an 8:00 AM check-in on the AquaQuest at B Finger. Ocean Free wants you at the Reef Fleet Terminal check-in desk at least 45 minutes before departure. So the longer trips need a morning, and I would not plan a hard commitment before 5 pm on the same day.
On board, food varies a lot. The half-day tour includes snacks and sells drinks. Ocean Free serves a Danish pastry and fruit on boarding, then a smorgasbord lunch with prawns, smoked salmon, meats, 3 salads and bread. Divers Den serves morning and afternoon tea and a tropical buffet lunch. For a family, the half-day trip is the lightest on the schedule and the full-day trips are the best value per hour in the water.
Cairns Snorkeling Tours
Cairns snorkeling tours differ in group style. Reef Adventures caps its group at 27, which is the smallest size on my list. Ocean Free describes small-group guided snorkelling led by a marine naturalist, with a marine biologist or interpreter on the drift snorkel. Divers Den offers a guided snorkel tour and a self-guided option, along with certified diving.

All three ratings are strong and based on more than 1,600 reviews, so I treat the choice as one of schedule and budget, not quality. Cairns snorkeling tours also differ in what they charge on top: wetsuit and prescription mask hire on the half-day tour, hotel pick-up on the Ocean Free cruise, and photo purchases on the Divers Den trip.
Cairns Diving Tours
Two of the three trips offer scuba diving on the same boat, which is why Cairns diving tours appear on this page. Ocean Free lists optional scuba diving at Upolu Reef for an extra fee, and Divers Den lists guided certified diving. The Reef Adventures half-day tour is for snorkellers only.
I can’t tell you what a dive costs, because the listings don’t give the fee in the text I have. If one person in your group wants to dive and the others want to snorkel, those two operators are the ones to compare. Certified divers should check the requirements on the booking page.
Snorkeling Cairns Half Day
Snorkeling in Cairns for half a day works if your time is short or the sea crossing worries you. The Reef Adventures tour runs 4 hours, includes hotel transfers, a snorkel guide, flotation devices, free GoPro photos and quality snorkelling equipment, and takes you away from the usual crowds in a group of up to 27. Wetsuit hire, prescription masks and drinks are extra.
I’d choose the half-day trip for a first reef visit with a nervous swimmer, or when the rest of the day is booked. The trade-off is time: most of the 4 hours is spent getting to and from the reef, and you get 1.5 hours in the water. The full-day trips give you roughly three to four times as long in the sea for $52 to $76 more.
Snorkeling Cairns Great Barrier Reef
Snorkeling on the Great Barrier Reef from Cairns means one of the outer-reef sites named in the listings. Ocean Free names Upolu Reef and Upolu Cay, with the sites Wonder Wall and Aquarium. Divers Den names its exclusive moorings at Norman, Saxon and Hastings reefs. Reef Adventures says only that it goes to one of 2 reefs, so ask the crew which one on the day.
Stingers matter here. The Queensland Government dates the marine stinger season as November to May and says stingers are present in tropical Queensland waters all year; see its page on dangerous marine life. Reef Adventures lists stinger suits in season, Ocean Free lists lycra suits and seasonal wetsuits, and Divers Den lists wetsuits and lycra suits. Ocean Free also lists a glass bottom boat tour, subject to sea conditions, which gives a dry view of the reef for anyone who stays aboard.
What to Ask Before You Book a Snorkeling Trip
A few questions separate these trips better than the star ratings do. How long is the crossing, and which day’s reef site will the boat use? The listings give 75 minutes to Upolu Reef on the Ocean Free cruise and about 1.5 hours each way on the Divers Den trip, while Reef Adventures does not state the crossing time. What is the cost of hiring a wetsuit or a prescription mask, if you need one? Reef Adventures lists both as hire items, and Ocean Free and Divers Den list a prescription mask as part of the trip.
Then think about your group. The Reef Adventures listing says it is not suitable for children under 6, wheelchair users, people with back, heart or respiratory problems, or people with mobility impairments, among others. That is the operator’s text, not medical advice, so check it against your own situation. Finally, think about photos: Reef Adventures includes free GoPro photos, while Divers Den sells professional photos and camera hire, and prices vary.
How I’d Choose a Cairns Snorkeling Trip
- One day, the most reef: Ocean Free and Ocean Freedom, $200, about 6 hours on the reef.
- Half a day, smallest group: Reef Adventures, $124, 4 hours, up to 27 guests.
- Snorkel with a dive option: Divers Den, $176, 8 hours.
Whatever you pick, book free cancellation and ask about stinger suits for your date. If you would rather stay inside the harbour, my river cruise page and sunset cruise page list cheaper evening trips, and my fishing charter page covers the reef for anglers. For every Cairns boat trip I compared, go back to boat tours in Cairns, or to my home page for other cities.
