Boat Tours in Punta Cana – Whale Watching and Montana Redonda Tour

Whale watching from Punta Cana is a long day trip, not a short boat ride from the resort coast. I compared 3 whale-watching tours, at $6 (as listed) and $201, and all of them appear in my full list of boat tours in Punta Cana. Prices are in US dollars, checked in October 2026, and the booking links are affiliate links, as I explain on my about page.

My pick for a whale watching tour in Punta Cana is the Dominican Attitude whale and Montana Redonda tour: $201, 9 to 10 hours, rated 4.4 from 26 reviews, with breakfast and a lunch with a view. It is for January to March only.

Whale Watching Season Punta Cana

The whale watching season for Punta Cana trips is the humpback season in Samana Bay. The official Dominican Republic tourism site says the bay “hosts the annual migration of humpback whales” and lists January to March as the best time to visit for whales, which is my source for the season on this page: godominicanrepublic.com, Samana. Today is 17 October, so the whales are not in the bay yet. A listing on a booking platform can stay open all year, so I would confirm the operating dates with the operator and book only for a date between January and March.

None of the three listings states its own season in the text I read. That is a gap, and it is the main reason I keep this page short on promises: I can’t tell you the odds of a sighting, the number of whales or how close the boat gets, and I won’t guess.

Whale Watching Punta Cana Dominican Republic

Whale watching in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, really means a trip to the north-east coast. Samana is about 117 km from Downtown Punta Cana in a straight line, Sabana de la Mar, where the Whale Punta Cana boat leaves, about 114 km, and Miches, where the Dominican Attitude tour has breakfast, about 79 km. The roads are longer than a straight line, and the Dominican Attitude listing gives 105 minutes on the bus to Miches alone. That is why every trip I found is a full day, and why the table shows long durations.

The three trips are built differently. Dominican Attitude combines a catamaran whale cruise of 2 to 3 hours with a visit to Montana Redonda by safari truck, a lunch with a panoramic sea view, use of the swings and a return through the Dominican countryside. The Whale Punta Cana sanctuary trip is a simpler whale watching day: whales, then a Dominican lunch on Cayo Levantado island with free time on the beach, and a return to Samana around 4:30 pm.

Whale Watching Tour Punta Cana

The whale watching tour in Punta Cana that I’d pick has the most inclusions: hotel pickup and drop-off, breakfast at Miches port, the whale cruise, a truck ride to Montana Redonda, a complete Dominican lunch, an official guide, the swings and waterproof clothing. The listing says it departs around 7:30 am and lists English, French and Spanish. It is not suitable for children under 3, pregnant women, people with back problems or people prone to seasickness. The rating is 4.4 from 26 reviews, which is a small sample, so I would read the recent ones.

The two Whale Punta Cana listings are the same operator with different meeting points. The first, Whale Watching and Cayo Levantado Island, meets you at your hotel around 6:30 am, drives to Sabana de la Mar port, boards the boat for whale watching, continues to Cayo Levantado for lunch and returns to the port at 4:30 pm. It is rated 5.0 from three reviews. The second meets at the Malecon in Samana at 8:30 am and is rated 3.6 from five reviews. Both are listed at $6 for a duration of “1 hour - 1 day”, with a free cancellation window of 24 hours.

I don’t trust a $6 price for a boat day with lunch. It may be a deposit or a placeholder, so open the booking page, pick a date and read the final total before you plan your budget around it.

What to Check Before Booking Whale Watching in Punta Cana

Three details differ between the listings and are worth reading twice. The first is where you start: one trip collects you from your hotel, one starts at the Malecon in Samana, and one has breakfast at Miches port after a long bus ride, so the same name on a booking page can mean very different mornings. The second is what the day includes. Dominican Attitude includes breakfast, lunch and waterproof clothing. The two Whale Punta Cana trips list tips and alcohol in their inclusions, and lunch is a Dominican meal on Cayo Levantado, an island in the bay.

The third is who the trip suits. The Dominican Attitude listing excludes children under 3, pregnant women, people with back problems and people prone to seasickness, partly because of the safari truck ride up to Montana Redonda. The Whale Punta Cana pages list no exclusions in the text I read, so I would ask about children before booking. Languages are English, French and Spanish on all three. With whale watching in Punta Cana, the listing is only half the information: the operator’s message after booking, with the exact meeting time, matters just as much.

Whale Season Punta Cana: Planning the Day

Whale watching in Punta Cana makes for a long day, so plan it as the only thing you do. Leave early, bring a layer for the wind on deck, and keep the return time in mind if you have a flight. Seasickness is the main risk: the Dominican Attitude listing excludes people prone to it, and a whale boat in open water moves more than a catamaran sandbar stop. If you get sick on boats, consider the calmer options in my catamaran tours in Punta Cana guide.

If you are not in the country between January and March, whale watching in Punta Cana is off the table and the other boat days are better value. A sunset on the water is on my sunset cruise page, the swim-and-drink days are on the party boat page, and the reef trips are on snorkeling in Punta Cana. Anglers should read my fishing charter page, and for a private boat, see yacht charters in Punta Cana.

How I’d Choose a Whale Trip in Punta Cana

Whichever whale watching trip from Punta Cana you pick, book for January to March, check the price at checkout and keep the 24-hour cancellation window in mind. For everything else on the water go back to every Punta Cana boat trip I compared, or to my home page.

Frequently asked questions

When is whale watching season in Punta Cana?

The Dominican Republic's official tourism site lists January to March as the whale season in Samana Bay. There are no whale boats from Punta Cana itself: all three trips I compared go to Samana Bay or Miches. Today is mid-October, so I wouldn't book any of them until the new year, and I'd read the date on your own listing.

How far is Samana from Punta Cana?

About 117 km in a straight line, and Sabana de la Mar, the port one trip uses, is about 114 km away. Real roads are longer. The Dominican Attitude listing includes a 105-minute bus ride to Miches before the boat. All three trips are full days, so I wouldn't plan anything else for the same day.

How much does a whale watching tour from Punta Cana cost?

The Dominican Attitude Excursions day trip is $201 for 9 to 10 hours, with breakfast, a lunch at Montana Redonda and a 2 to 3 hour boat cruise. The two Whale Punta Cana listings show only $6, which looks too low for a day with a port transfer and lunch, so check the total at checkout before you rely on it.

Can I see whales from Punta Cana in summer?

Not on the trips I compared. The official Dominican Republic tourism site names January to March for whales in Samana Bay, and its page lists July to August as another peak for the destination in general. I wouldn't book a whale trip outside the first months of the year, whatever the booking page shows.

Where do the whale watching boats leave from?

From Samana Bay, not Punta Cana. One trip leaves from Sabana de la Mar port after a drive from your hotel, another meets at the Malecon in Samana, and the Dominican Attitude trip has breakfast at Miches port before the boat. Each listing states its own meeting point, so read it before you book.
