Whale watching in Maui is a winter trip: the humpbacks come to these waters for a few months each year to mate and give birth, and the boats go out to see them. I compared the three whale trips you can book on GetYourGuide, from $50 to $113, each two hours long. For the full list of cruises I compared across the island, see my guide to boat tours in Maui. Prices are in US dollars, checked in October 2026, and booking links are affiliate links, as I explain on my about page.
My pick for whale watching in Maui is the Epic Small Group Whale Watch from Maui Ocean Adventures at $73: 4.9 from 125 reviews, a hydrophone to hear the whales, and a stated guarantee of whale sightings. If I wanted the lowest price, I’d take the $50 Quicksilver, and if I wanted to board from the beach, the $113 Teralani.
Whale Watching Maui Hawaii
Whale watching in Maui, Hawaii is built around three departure points and three kinds of boat. The Quicksilver is a double-deck power catamaran from Ma’alaea Harbor, the Teralani is a luxury sailing catamaran that loads from Ka’anapali Beach, and the Maui Ocean Adventures trip is a small group cruise from the old pier area in Lahaina. They all run two hours, and they all offer cancellation for a refund, up to 24 hours ahead on the small group trip and up to 2 days ahead on the other two.

The cheapest way to think about it is price per hour. The Quicksilver works out at $25 an hour, the small group trip at $36.50 and the Teralani at $56.50. Differences in the extras are bigger than they look: the Teralani includes breakfast snacks, Kona coffee, tropical juices and Pogmosas, and the Quicksilver includes soda, juice and water with alcohol for sale. The small group trip lists filtered water only, and says there is no food and no bathroom on board.
Maui Whale Watching Tours
The Quicksilver tour is the volume leader among Maui whale watching tours: 1,091 reviews at 4.6. The listing describes a captain and crew who narrate whale behavior, underwater hydrophones so you can hear the whale songs, and restrooms on board. You check in at the Boss Frog’s shop at 300 Ma’alaea Road, Building 2, Shop 2N, and the itinerary goes out into Ma’alaea Bay and back. Reviewers describe babies and several whales, and one says the captain tried hard to find one at the end of April.

My pick: The budget pick and the most reviewed: $50, two hours, double-deck catamaran, hydrophones, 4.6 from 1,091 reviews.
The Teralani trip is the one I’d choose if boarding is the hassle. The listing says guests walk onto the boat from Ka’anapali Beach, so you don’t drive to a state harbor. It costs $113 and has 4.8 from 170 reviews. Check-in is at the Aqualani Beach Activities Kiosk, and exclusive parking is at the Outrigger Ka’anapali Beach Resort, at 2525 Kaanapali Pkwy. The listing says wheelchair users cannot take it, so check that if anyone in your group needs access.

My pick: Boards from the sand at Ka'anapali: $113, two hours, 4.8 from 170 reviews, snacks and Pogmosas included.
Whale Watching Maui Season
The humpback whale season in Maui runs through the winter. The only date range in my data is the Calypso dinner cruise listing, which names humpback whales from December through April. The reviews agree with a fading end: a Quicksilver guest writes that sightings were unlikely at the end of April, and a guest on the small group trip says they took one of the last days of the season. Whale trips that run outside that window would be a gamble.
For the science, the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary is run by NOAA and covers the whales that come to Hawaii. I’d read it before booking a date near either end of the season. In the middle of the season, I’d expect the boats to see whales on most trips, but I won’t promise a number.
Maui Whale Watching Season
In practice the Maui whale watching season shapes how you book. If you travel in December or April, book a trip with free cancellation and a flexible date, then pick the sunniest morning. If you travel between January and March, you can book the cheapest trip and still expect a good outing. The listings do not give departure times, so look at the times offered for your date on the booking page.
The $50 Quicksilver is the cheapest ticket whatever the month, so the season changes your odds more than your budget.
Whale Watching Maui Lahaina
Whale watching from Lahaina means the Maui Ocean Adventures small group trip. It costs $73 and the listing says it is a no-shoes cruise, so wear footwear you can slip off. You check in at Mala Boat Ramp at least 20 minutes before departure. The meeting instructions say to park at the Cannery Mall parking lot or on the 1200 block of Front St, look for the sign and walk toward the ocean, and they suggest a rideshare because parking is tight.
The listing names views of Molokai, Lanai, Kahoolawe, Haleakala and the West Maui mountains, a hydrophone, a guided tour by the captain and crew, and filtered water. There is no food and no bathroom on board. It scores 4.9 from 125 reviews, and a reviewer calls it the best whale watching they have done, naming the guide, which tells me the guiding matters here. From the Mala Boat Ramp to Lahaina Harbor is about a mile on the map.

My pick: My pick: $73, two hours, 4.9 from 125 reviews, a stated whale sighting guarantee and a small group.
Maui Whale Watching Cruise
A Maui whale watching cruise is also something you can add to other trips. The Malolo and Calypso snorkel itineraries both mention whale watching on the channel crossings, and the Calypso dinner cruise watches for humpbacks from December through April. I’d still pick one of the three trips above if whales are the reason you are going, because the others are built around snorkeling and dinner.
For the other trips that suit the season, I’d look at my sunset cruise page for evening sails, my snorkeling page for Molokini, and my catamaran page for stable boats. My sailing page and dinner cruise page cover the rest. The Teralani whale watch also appears there as a sailing trip.
What to Know Before You Book
Three practical points from the listings. The Quicksilver lists tips and parking fees as not included, so budget for both at Ma’alaea. The Teralani lists no tip line, and the small group trip lists no hotel pickup. And the Quicksilver sells alcohol on board, while the small group boat lists only filtered water.
If you want a longer view of the choice, my guide to every Maui boat tour I compared puts these three beside the snorkeling, sunset and dinner trips. Go back to the home page for the other cities on the site. Whichever Maui whale watching trip you take, bring a layer, a hat and sunscreen, and confirm the check-in point in your confirmation email.
