Kuranda Riverboat Tours
Riverboat Tour with a Chance to Spot Wildlife
4.7 (336) · from $21

A river cruise in Cairns means one of two very different places: the mangrove creeks of Trinity Inlet beside the city, or the Barron River at Kuranda, in the rainforest inland. I compared 4 Cairns river cruises, from $21 to $96, and each also appears in my full list of boat tours in Cairns. Prices are in US dollars, checked in October 2026, and the booking links are affiliate links, as I explain on my about page.
My pick for most visitors is the Bad Fishy 75-minute inlet cruise at $44, because it leaves from the marina and includes a drink and a snack. If you’ll be at Kuranda anyway, I’d add the Kuranda riverboat at $21, rated 4.7 from 336 reviews.

A boat cruise in Cairns on the inlet is the easy option: no early start, no sea crossing, and the boat leaves from the marina where most tours do. The three Bad Fishy cruises share one operator, one berth (A1) and the same skipper-led format. The 75-minute cruise glides through the peaceful creeks of Trinity Inlet, with panoramic views of the Cairns skyline framed by mangroves and distant mountains. The sunset cruise adds 15 minutes and the evening light. The package combines the two.
| Cruise | Operator | Price | Duration | Boat | Rating | Cancellation |

| Kuranda riverboat | Kuranda Riverboat Tours | $21 | 45 minutes | Calm-water riverboat | 4.7 (336) | Free, 24 hours |
| 75-minute inlet cruise | Bad Fishy Jet Boating | $44 | 75 minutes | Skippered boat | 4.6 (70) | Free, 24 hours |
| 90-minute sunset inlet cruise | Bad Fishy Jet Boating | $53 | 1.5 hours | Skippered boat | 4.6 (245) | Free, 24 hours |
| Inlet and sunset, 2 tours | Bad Fishy Jet Boating | $96 | 3 hours | Skippered boat | None yet | Free, 24 hours |
The ratings are good across the board, but only the Kuranda and sunset cruises have a solid number of reviews. The 75-minute cruise has 70, and the package none, so treat them as promising.
The riverboat cruise at Kuranda is a separate trip from the Cairns marina, and I’d say so clearly, because it catches visitors out. It is a 45-minute calm-water cruise on the Barron River, with English commentary from a local guide about the history of Kuranda and the animals, reptiles and birds that live in the area. The listing mentions freshwater crocodiles, turtles, snakes, water dragons, fish and more than 100 species of tropical birds, and says cassowaries are sometimes seen on the far side of the river.
You get to the jetty by walking across the footbridge at Kuranda Railway Station, then down the stairs to the river where red flags are flying. The listing lists transfers as included, but I can’t tell from the text what they cover, so check the booking page. For context, the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway base is about 12 km in a straight line from the marina, and Barron Falls is about 18 km; Kuranda is further inland still.
No river cruise in my list is sold as a crocodile tour, and I would not promise a sighting. What the listings do say is specific. The 75-minute inlet cruise says the creeks are home to rich biodiversity, including saltwater crocodiles in their natural environment. The Kuranda listing names freshwater crocodiles, and it says plainly that it cannot guarantee that they will be visible because they are wild creatures.
If crocodiles are the point, the Mandingalbay sunset cruise on my sunset cruise page is the one that goes looking: it includes spotlighting for crocodiles after dark and says they are more active during the summer months. That is a $69 trip, 2 hours, with no reviews yet. A crocodile river cruise in Cairns is a bonus of a good cruise, and I would pick on the rest of the trip.
People search for river cruise opening hours because they want to know when the boats go. The listings I have do not publish a timetable. The Bad Fishy listings say to meet at Berth A1 and do not give departure times in the text, and the Kuranda listing gives the meeting point but not the times. Both are booked by date and time slot on the booking platform.
So I’d check the available slots for your day on the booking page, and if you are visiting Kuranda by train or Skyrail, plan the riverboat around your return time. The 45-minute cruise is short enough to fit into most Kuranda days. For an evening slot, my dinner cruise page lists the boarding times for the Spirit of Cairns, 5:45 pm for a 6:15 pm departure.
Many visitors look for a Daintree River cruise from Cairns. None of the four river cruises I compared is on the Daintree, and I did not find a Daintree listing among my Cairns boat tours, so I leave that river to other pages. The river cruises on this page are the Barron River at Kuranda and Trinity Inlet beside the city.
On the inlet you see the Cairns skyline from the water, the mangroves lining the creeks and the mountains behind the city. The 75-minute listing says the creeks are home to rich biodiversity, and you keep an eye out for local wildlife from the boat. The sunset listing promises the golden-hour glow and wildlife winding down for the evening. At Kuranda the river is bordered by rainforest, and the guide talks about the history of Kuranda along with the animals, reptiles and birds.
Reviewers of the sunset cruise call it relaxing, and one wrote that the captain was knowledgeable and friendly and that she felt very well taken care of while travelling alone. I take that as a sign that a river cruise in Cairns works well for solo visitors, though one comment is not a measurement.
Per minute the Kuranda riverboat is the cheapest river cruise in Cairns at about $0.47 a minute, then the 75-minute inlet cruise at about $0.59, and the 90-minute sunset cruise at about $0.59. The package costs $96 for the two inlet cruises, which is $1 less than booking them separately at $44 and $53. The extra on the sunset cruise is the light that comes with it.
The inlet cruises are in an estuary, not on the open sea, which is why I’d call them the easiest boat trips in Cairns for a nervous traveller. They are also short: 75 minutes, 90 minutes or 3 hours with the package. The Queensland Government dates marine stinger season as November to May and says stingers are present in tropical Queensland waters all year; see its page on dangerous marine life. You stay in the boat on a river cruise, so I’d treat it as a reason not to swim from the jetty, not a reason to skip the cruise.
If you’d rather drive your own boat on the same water, my boat rental page covers the tinny and pontoon from Berth A1, and my fishing charter page covers the guided estuary morning. For the reef, my snorkeling page has the three trips.
Whichever river cruise in Cairns you choose, take the free cancellation and look at the slot for your date. For every Cairns boat trip I compared, go back to boat tours in Cairns, or to my home page for other cities.
In my list the Kuranda riverboat costs $21 for 45 minutes, the Bad Fishy 75-minute inlet cruise costs $44, the 90-minute sunset inlet cruise costs $53, and the two-cruise package costs $96 for 3 hours. Prices are in US dollars, checked in October 2026, and all four offer free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start.
Yes, according to the listings. The Kuranda riverboat lists freshwater crocodiles and says it cannot guarantee you will see them. The 75-minute Bad Fishy inlet cruise says the creeks hold saltwater crocodiles in their natural environment. Both describe wild animals, so a sighting depends on the day and I can't promise one.
The Kuranda riverboat is a 45-minute cruise on the Barron River, inland from the coast, with English commentary and rainforest wildlife. The inlet cruises leave from the Cairns Marlin Marina and run through Trinity Inlet, the estuary beside the city, past mangroves with a view of the Cairns skyline.
The three Bad Fishy cruises leave from Berth A1 at the Cairns Marlin Marina and ask you to make your own way there. The Kuranda riverboat leaves from the Kuranda Riverboat Jetty, reached by walking across the footbridge at Kuranda Railway Station and going down the stairs to the river, where red flags fly.
The Bad Fishy 75-minute cruise includes a skipper, a complimentary drink and a light savoury snack. The sunset version includes a beer, wine or soft drink and a light snack. The Kuranda riverboat includes a 45-minute calm water cruise with English commentary and lists transfers. Food is not a feature of the Kuranda trip.
