Boat Tours Cairns – Tinny (Dinghie) Boat Hire

Boat rental in Cairns means a self-drive boat on Trinity Inlet, the calm estuary beside the city, and I found two of them on GetYourGuide. One is a small tinny for 4 people at $131, and the other is an 8-person pontoon at $172. Both also appear in my full list of boat tours in Cairns. Prices are in US dollars, checked in October 2026, and the booking links are affiliate links, as I explain on my about page.

My pick for a family or a group is the pontoon, because its canopy and 8 places make a day on the inlet easier. For a couple or a small fishing party, I’d choose the tinny. Both have small review samples, 4.8 from 8 for the pontoon and 4.1 from 18 for the tinny, so I’d treat them as promising and not proven.

Boat Hire in Cairns

Boat rental in Cairns is run by Cairns Boat Hire from Berth A1 at the Cairns Marlin Marina, and the whole experience happens in Trinity Inlet. The tinny listing describes a stunning estuary lined with mangrove forests and winding tributaries, just minutes from the city, with rainforest-covered mountains as a backdrop. It is the same body of water that the Bad Fishy inlet cruises use, which I cover on my river cruise page.

The tinny is for a maximum of 4 people. The pontoon holds 8 and is described as having a shaded canopy. You choose a half-day or full-day hire at the time of booking, and both are priced across a 4 to 8 hour range on the booking platform. I’d always book the half-day first if it’s your first time driving a boat. Boat rentals in Cairns are sold by date on the booking platform, so check availability for your day before you plan the rest of the trip around it, and remember that both boats depart from Berth A1 at the Marlin Marina.

Cairns Boat Hire

What a Cairns boat rental includes is short and clear. The tinny price covers the boat and fuel. Food and drink are your own, and fishing rods, an esky and a skipper cost extra, as do bait and ice. The pontoon price covers 8-person pontoon hire, life jackets, fuel, a safety and introduction briefing, and tips on the best fishing spots based on the tides and the time of day.

Boat Operator Price Duration Capacity Rating Cancellation
Tinny (dinghy) hire Cairns Boat Hire $131 4 to 8 hours 4 people 4.1 (18) Free, 24 hours
Pontoon with optional BBQ Cairns Boat Hire $172 4 to 8 hours 8 people 4.8 (8) Free, 24 hours

Per head, the pontoon is the better boat rental in Cairns for a full group if you fill it: $172 across 8 people is under $22 each, against $131 across 4 for the tinny, or about $33 each. That arithmetic only holds if the price covers the whole boat, which is how I read both listings; check the booking page for your date.

Cairns Boat Charter

If you’d rather not drive, a Cairns boat rental with a skipper is possible. The pontoon listing offers skipper service at $50 per hour, and says the skipper is included in the passenger count. The tinny listing says a skipper is available for hire at additional cost without giving the fee. Neither is a full charter in the sense of a large boat with a crew, so for that I’d look at the cruises on my sunset cruise page or the guided trips on my fishing charter page.

I’d choose a skipper if nobody in your group has driven a boat, or if you want local knowledge of where the fish are. The skipper’s hourly fee adds up over a full day, so work out the total before you decide.

Cairns Boat Hire Fishing

Fishing is the main use of a Cairns boat rental, and both boats are set up for it. The tinny listing names barramundi, mangrove jack, golden snapper, grunter, bream, estuary cod and flathead as species in Trinity Inlet. It says rods, bait, ice and eskies can be hired, so you can arrive without gear.

The pontoon includes tips on the best fishing spots, based on the tides and time of day, and rods and bait can be hired. I can’t promise you will catch anything. If catching fish matters more than the boat, my fishing charter page compares the guided options, which include the tackle and a guide. I do not know the local fishing rules from the listings, so ask the crew about size and catch limits.

Cairns Boat Hire Prices

Cairns boat rental prices on my list start at $131 for the tinny and $172 for the pontoon. Extras are where the bill changes: a skipper at $50 an hour on the pontoon, hired rods and bait, a BBQ and BBQ packs. The BBQ packs need a minimum of 24 hours notice. On the tinny, bait and ice are bought at extra cost.

I’d add a food and drink budget on both boats, since neither provides lunch. The listing for the tinny asks you to bring your own, and the pontoon has a BBQ option for cooking on board. Fuel is included on both, which removes the one surprise cost of hiring a boat.

Cairns Boat Hire Photos

People search for photos of a Cairns boat rental because they want to know what they are renting. Both listings carry photo galleries on the booking page, and a Cairns boat rental is easy to judge from them. The tinny listing describes a shaded boat with comfortable bench seating, and the pontoon listing describes a comfortable boat with a shaded canopy. The marina is also a good place for photos, because the Esplanade Lagoon is 0.34 km away and the cluster of boat fingers makes a good backdrop.

Crocodiles are the other thing to know about the water you will photograph. The tinny listing says to keep an eye out for local wildlife, including birds, fish and even saltwater crocodiles. I’d keep arms and legs inside the boat. The Queensland Government dates the marine stinger season as November to May, and says stingers are present in tropical Queensland waters all year; see its page on dangerous marine life. The inlet is an estuary, so I’d treat swimming off the boat as something to ask the crew about, not assume.

How I’d Choose Boat Rental in Cairns

These Cairns boat rentals suit different groups, and the choice mostly comes down to numbers.

Whichever boat rental in Cairns you pick, take the free cancellation, arrive early at Berth A1 and bring food. For the reef, a hire boat is not the answer, and my snorkeling page covers the trips that go there. For every Cairns boat trip I compared, go back to boat tours in Cairns, or to my home page for other cities.

Frequently asked questions

How much does boat rental in Cairns cost?

In my list the tinny (dinghy) for up to 4 people costs $131 for a half-day or full-day hire of 4 to 8 hours, with the boat and fuel included. The 8-person pontoon costs $172 for the same 4 to 8 hour range, with life jackets and fuel included. Prices are in US dollars, checked in October 2026.

Do I need a boat licence to hire a boat in Cairns?

The pontoon listing says no marine licence is required to drive, but the driver must be 18 or older and hold a valid driver's licence. The tinny listing does not state a licence rule in the text I have. Ask Cairns Boat Hire which rules apply to your group before you book, and check the page for the date you want.

Where do the Cairns hire boats leave from?

Both leave from Berth A1 at the Marlin Marina in Cairns. The pontoon listing says to collect your boat from Berth A1, and the tinny listing gives the same meeting point. The marina is about 0.19 km from The Pier shopping centre in a straight line, so you can walk there from the Esplanade side.

Is fishing gear included in a Cairns boat hire?

No. On the tinny, rods, an esky and a skipper can be hired at extra cost, and bait and ice can be bought. On the pontoon, rods and bait are available for hire, and the BBQ and BBQ packs are optional, with 24 hours notice for the packs. Food and drink are your own on the tinny.

Can I cancel a Cairns boat hire?

Both listings say you can cancel up to 24 hours before the start for a full refund, according to the booking-platform text. Because weather can change a day on the water, I'd read the policy on the page of the hire you choose and book a date with some flexibility around it.
