Sydney Boat Trips – Electric Boat Rental from Cabarita Point

Boat rental Sydney offers on the big booking sites comes down to two GoBoat Australia electric picnic boats: one at Cabarita Point on the Parramatta River for $103 and one at The Spit in Mosman on Middle Harbour for $172. Both are 1 to 3 hours and both are boats you skipper yourselves. I compared them with 20 other trips on my page about boat tours in Sydney. Prices are US dollars from the listings, checked in October 2026, and booking links are affiliate links.

My pick: for the harbour feel I’d book the Spit boat at $172, but with 6 reviews for its 5.0 I would say the evidence is thin. For a cheaper first try I’d take the Cabarita Point boat at $103, which has 19 reviews at 3.9.

Boat Hire Sydney

Boat rental in Sydney means different things in different places, so I compared the two rentals on what they share and where they differ.

Rental Operator Price Duration Water Rating Cancellation
Electric Boat Rental from The Spit, Mosman GoBoat Australia $172 1 to 3 hours Middle Harbour 5.0 (6) Free up to 24 hours
Electric Boat Rental from Cabarita Point GoBoat Australia $103 1 to 3 hours Parramatta River 3.9 (19) Full refund up to 24 hours

Both are the same product on different water. The listings describe a Danish-designed picnic boat with a state-of-the-art electric motor and a fiberglass hull made from recycled PET bottles. You choose your own route and schedule, and you bring a drinks cooler or a picnic basket. A safety briefing and demonstration is included, along with safety equipment. The listings do not give the number of people the boat takes, its speed or its range, so I can’t compare capacity, and I would check those on the booking page.

Sydney Boat Hire

The gap between $103 and $172 is the first thing you notice among Sydney boat rental prices. The listings don’t explain it, and I don’t want to guess whether it reflects the boat, the season, the location or the package, so I would pick by the water you want. The Spit is the gateway to Middle Harbour, which runs inland on the north side of the city, and it is about 7 km from Circular Quay in a straight line. Cabarita Point is on the Parramatta River, upstream of the harbour and the Opera House.

The listing for Cabarita Point names three things to see: the Gladesville Bridge, the Convict Precinct and the Shipwreck Lookout, which it describes as an abandoned ship overgrown with trees. Its 3.9 from 19 reviews is weaker than most of the 22 trips I compared, so I looked at the snippets: one reviewer found the boat easy to handle and had a picnic with the kids, another had threatening weather that cleared up. The numbers are a signal and not a verdict, and a 3.9 from 19 reviews can move a lot with one or two more.

Boat Hire Sydney Harbour

A boat rental on Sydney Harbour proper is not on offer in my data. The Spit boat is on Middle Harbour, an arm of the harbour, and the Cabarita Point boat is on the Parramatta River, so neither starts at Circular Quay or Darling Harbour. If you want the Opera House and the Harbour Bridge behind you, a guided kayak or a cruise is the realistic choice, and the kayak tour page compares five of them.

What a Sydney boat rental does give you is time on your own terms. The listings say you can follow the waterway and choose your route and schedule for maximum flexibility, and the one-to-three-hour range means you can book the short version first. The Spit listing describes it as a self-guided sightseeing trip that begins and ends at GoBoat Sydney at The Spit in Mosman. Check the meeting point with the operator: both listings tell you to look for the GoBoat desk at D’Albora Marina.

Sydney Boat Hire Party

A boat rental in Sydney for a party is possible in the sense that these are private-group boats and the descriptions invite you to bring food and drinks. The category tag on both listings is private group. I would not treat them as party boats, though: there is no DJ, no bar and no crew, and an electric picnic boat moves at an easy pace.

For a group that wants music and a bar, the three shared party cruises are on my party boat page, all leaving from King Street Wharf at $28 to $69 a ticket. For a smaller friends’ day out, the GoBoat is a better fit. One reviewer of the Spit boat called it the perfect friends’ activity, and said they had two hours on the water in the sun, with a picnic and drinks. Weather matters more on an open picnic boat than on a large cruise, so book the refundable ticket.

Boat Charter Sydney

A boat charter in Sydney, with a skipper, is a different product from this one. In my comparison, the nearest equivalent is the Sydney Charter Fishing vessel, which takes up to 14 guests offshore or 26 in the harbour on a 4-hour or 7-hour charter. It is a fishing boat with a crew, and the fishing charter page has the details.

Google Maps also lists operators of yachts and boat hire businesses in Sydney, including Ucruise Sydney Boat Hire, Coast Cruises and Sydney Luxury Cruise, but I have no prices or inclusions for them, so I can’t compare them with the GoBoat prices. If you are comparing a skippered charter with a self-drive rental, ask each for the price per person at your group size and for what happens in bad weather.

Boat Rental Sydney Australia

Boat rental in Sydney, Australia, comes with one cancellation rule for both boats: free cancellation or a full refund up to 24 hours before the start. For a rental that is useful, because a small open boat on a windy day is less pleasant than a larger cruise. I would check the forecast the day before and keep the booking flexible, particularly in winter. The sunset times on my sunset cruise page show how early it gets dark in June and July, which matters for a 3-hour rental.

If you are also thinking of the water without the boat, my snorkeling page covers the guided reef trips at Manly and Clovelly.

How I’d Choose a Boat Rental in Sydney

Whichever boat rental Sydney trip you pick, book a refundable slot and look at the forecast the day before. For all the other ways onto the water, see the full list of boat tours in Sydney, or go back to the home page.

If you are comparing other trips on the water, I also cover whale watching cruises, dinner cruises.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a boat rental in Sydney?

In my comparison there are two, both GoBoat Australia electric picnic boats. The Cabarita Point boat on the Parramatta River costs $103 and the Spit boat in Mosman on Middle Harbour costs $172, both for 1 to 3 hours. The listings do not say whether the price is per boat or per person, so check the booking page for your group size.

Do I need a boat licence to hire a boat in Sydney?

The listings don't say. They describe a safety briefing and demonstration, safety equipment and a boat you skipper yourself, and one reviewer who had never driven a boat found it easy to use. I can't confirm the licence rules from my data, so ask GoBoat before you book and check the rules with Transport for NSW.

Where can I rent a boat in Sydney?

GoBoat Australia operates from two places in my comparison: Cabarita Point on the Parramatta River, with a meeting point at D'Albora Marina, and The Spit in Mosman, on Middle Harbour. The Spit is about 7 km from Circular Quay in a straight line. Both listings tell you to look for the GoBoat Electric Boat Rentals desk at the marina.

Can I bring food and drinks on a Sydney rental boat?

Yes. Both descriptions invite you to bring a drinks cooler with cold drinks or your own picnic basket, and one reviewer enjoyed a picnic and drinks on board. The boats are picnic boats with an electric motor, so they are quiet. The listings do not say whether alcohol is allowed, so check the rules with the operator.

Can I cancel a Sydney boat rental?

Yes. Both listings state that you can cancel up to 24 hours before the start for a full refund. After that you would normally lose the booking, so check the weather forecast and your plans the day before, since a small open boat is more affected by rain and wind than a larger cruise.
