Reef Adventures Cairns
Great Barrier Reef Half-Day Snorkelling Tour
4.7 (1,984) · from $124

Boat tours in Cairns come in six shapes: a day on the Great Barrier Reef, a short half-day snorkel, a cruise on the calm water of Trinity Inlet, an evening with dinner or sunset, a fishing charter, and a boat you hire and drive yourself. I compared 14 boat tours in Cairns on GetYourGuide, from $21 to $273. Prices are in US dollars, checked in October 2026, and the booking links are affiliate links, as I explain on my about page.
My short answer: if I had one day, I’d book the Ocean Free and Ocean Freedom reef cruise ($200, 4.8 from 1,633 reviews). If I had only a morning or an afternoon, I’d take the Reef Adventures half-day snorkel ($124). If I had one evening, I’d choose the Bad Fishy sunset inlet cruise ($53). Nearly every departure point sits within a few hundred metres of the Cairns Marlin Marina, so the choice among Cairns boat tours is about the type of trip, not the location.
Cairns boat trips start from a handful of finger piers at the Marlin Marina, and the three boat tours in Cairns I list first are the best rated of their kind. The Reef Adventures half-day snorkel is $124 for 4 hours, rated 4.7 from 1,984 reviews. The crew meets you 30 minutes before departure on Finger B, and the listing caps the group at 27 guests, with 3 departures a day. A fast boat takes you to one of 2 reefs for 1.5 hours of guided snorkelling. Snacks, gear, a snorkel guide and free GoPro photos are included, and the listing says stinger suits are provided in season.
The second is the 75-minute inlet cruise from Bad Fishy, $44 and rated 4.6 from 70 reviews. It leaves from Berth A1 and glides through the mangrove creeks of Trinity Inlet, with a skipper, a complimentary drink and a light snack. It is the cheapest Cairns boat tour I found that leaves from the marina. The third is the Mandingalbay sunset cruise, covered in my sunset cruise page, at $69 for 2 hours. It has no reviews on the platform yet, but it is the only one of my Cairns boat tours that lands at an Indigenous Protected Area, East Trinity, with a Welcome to Country and canapes.

My pick: My pick for a short reef trip: $124, 4 hours, 1.5 hours of guided snorkelling and a group capped at 27.

Bad Fishy Jet Boating in Cairns
My pick: The cheapest way onto the water at the marina: $44, 75 minutes through the mangroves of Trinity Inlet.

My pick: A sunset cruise with a cultural visit: $69, 2 hours, East Trinity reserve and canapes, no reviews yet.
Cairns boat cruises divide into big reef catamarans, small-boat fishing and the double inlet package, and these boat tours in Cairns are priced very differently. The reef cruise is the one I’d put first. Ocean Free and Ocean Freedom costs $200 for a day of 8.5 hours, and meets at the Reef Fleet Terminal 45 minutes before departure. The catamaran takes 75 minutes to Upolu Reef, and the listing promises 6 hours on the reef in two sites inside protected Green zones, with guided drift snorkelling, a glass bottom boat tour subject to sea conditions, a smorgasbord lunch and fresh water showers. Hotel pick-up is an extra. Diving is optional and costs more, which matters if you plan to try it.
The second card is a very different boat: the Cairns Reef Fishing charter at $273 for 9 hours. Check-in is at 6:00 AM at The Pier Cafe, the boat travels about 90 minutes offshore to grounds within 50 km of Cairns, and the price includes tackle, a buffet lunch, afternoon tea, reef taxes, alcohol and soft drinks, and cleaning and packing your catch. It has 4.3 from 39 reviews, so the sample is small. My fishing charter page compares it with the estuary trip.
The third card is a bundle. The Bad Fishy two-tour package puts the 75-minute inlet cruise and the 90-minute sunset cruise into a 3 hour day for $96. It has no reviews yet. It only works if you want both cruises on the same day, and my river cruise page lists each cruise on its own.

Ocean Free and Ocean Freedom
My pick: My all-round reef pick: $200, 8.5 hours, two reef sites in Green zones and lunch, 4.8 from 1,633 reviews.

Cairns Reef Fishing
My pick: For anglers: $273, 9 hours offshore with tackle, lunch and your catch packed, 4.3 from 39 reviews.
Night tourBad Fishy Jet Boating in Cairns
My pick: Both Bad Fishy inlet cruises on one day for $96, and a sunset at the end of the second, no reviews yet.
None of the 14 trips I compared sails to Port Douglas. Every one starts in Cairns, and the reef trips come back to the same marina the same day, so I read this search as a question about reef trips and not a transfer by boat. Any boat tour in Cairns that reaches the outer reef takes 75 to 90 minutes each way. The Divers Den day trip is the one I’d look at, because it is the longest and most diving-oriented of the three reef trips: $176 for 8 hours, rated 4.6 from 1,601 reviews. Check-in is at 8:00 AM on the vessel AquaQuest at B Finger, and the boat travels about 1.5 hours to the outer reef, where the listing promises up to 5 hours at two moorings among Norman, Saxon and Hastings reefs.
The other card in this section is not a reef trip at all. The Fish Tales estuary charter ($104, 4.5 hours) stays inside Trinity Inlet, which its listing calls a State Marine Park. It meets at 6:30 am on Finger D, Berth 2, and includes rods, bait and a guide, but no food. I’d choose it if you want a short morning fishing and have an afternoon free.

Divers Den
My pick: The reef day trip with the most dive options: $176, 8 hours, two moorings and up to 5 hours at the outer reef.

Fish Tales Charters Cairns-Fishing Adventures
My pick: A quiet morning of estuary fishing in Trinity Inlet: $104, 4.5 hours, tackle and bait included, no food.
The best Cairns boat tours depend on what you want from the day, so I rank by data and not by taste. A good boat tour in Cairns is one that matches your time, budget and swimming ability. By rating and review count, the reef cruises lead: 4.8 from 1,633 for Ocean Free, 4.7 from 1,984 for Reef Adventures and 4.6 from 1,601 for Divers Den. The Kuranda riverboat is the one I’d pick for people who want a gentle, cheap outing: $21, 45 minutes, rated 4.7 from 336 reviews.
It is not a Trinity Inlet cruise. It leaves from the Kuranda riverboat jetty, which you reach by walking across the footbridge at Kuranda Railway Station and going down the stairs to the river, where red flags fly. The listing describes a calm-water cruise on the Barron River with English commentary, and says freshwater crocodiles, turtles, snakes, water dragons and more than 100 bird species live along it. It says it cannot guarantee that any animal will be visible. Kuranda is not in the marina area, so budget travel time to get there. The Skyrail Rainforest Cableway base is about 12 km in a straight line from the marina, and Barron Falls is about 18 km.
The other card is the opposite kind of trip: the tinny hire from Cairns Boat Hire, $131 for 4 to 8 hours, rated 4.1 from 18 reviews. You drive a small boat for up to 4 people on Trinity Inlet. Fuel and the hire are included, but food, drink, a skipper, rods and ice are not. My boat rental page compares it with the pontoon.

Kuranda Riverboat Tours
My pick: The cheap, gentle choice: $21, 45 minutes on the Barron River at Kuranda, 4.7 from 336 reviews.

Cairns Boat Hire
My pick: Drive your own: $131 for a half or full day in a four-person tinny on Trinity Inlet.
I found no dedicated crocodile cruise among my Cairns boat tours, and I would not book one boat tour in Cairns just for that reason. Crocodiles show up in the listings in three places. The 75-minute Bad Fishy inlet cruise says the creeks hold saltwater crocodiles in their natural environment. The Mandingalbay sunset cruise includes spotlighting for crocodiles after dark and says they are more active in the summer months. The Kuranda riverboat lists freshwater crocodiles. If crocodiles are your reason for coming, those are the three to look at, and each is on this page or my river cruise page.
The two cards below are evening trips, so I keep them honest: they are dinner cruises, not crocodile tours. The Spirit of Cairns Dinner Cruise is $100 for 2.5 hours on a sailing catamaran. Boarding opens at 5:45 pm, the boat leaves promptly at 6:15 pm, and the price includes a welcome drink and a hot and cold seafood buffet, with live music from Sunday to Thursday. It has 4.5 from 432 reviews. The City Sights Tour with Evening Dinner Cruise is a 9 hour day at $180 with 15 hotel pick-up options, a stop at St Monica’s Cathedral and the Cairns Museum and Botanic Gardens, then a 3-course buffet dinner on the water. It has 4.9 from 9 reviews, which is too few to lean on. Both are on my dinner cruise page.
Night tourTusa Reef Tours & Spirit of Cairns
My pick: My dinner pick: $100, 2.5 hours on a catamaran in Trinity Inlet with a buffet and a welcome drink, 4.5 from 432 reviews.
Night tourTropic Wings Cairns Tours & Charters
My pick: A full day of city sights ending with a 3-course dinner cruise: $180, 9 hours, hotel pick-up, only 9 reviews.
Of my 14 listings, only the Ocean Free and Ocean Freedom reef cruise names a glass bottom boat, as part of its day on the reef and subject to sea conditions. It is on the Cairns boat cruises list above. I found no Cairns boat tour that is only a glass-boat ride, so the two cards in this section are not glass-bottom trips. They are the last two trips left over after the other sections, and I place them here because they suit people who want a calmer way onto the water.
The 90-minute Bad Fishy sunset inlet cruise is the one I’d pick for a low-effort evening: $53, rated 4.6 from 245 reviews, with a complimentary beer, wine or soft drink and a light snack. It leaves from Berth A1, and you make your own way to the marina. The pontoon hire is the other: $172 for 4 to 8 hours for up to 8 people, rated 4.8 from 8 reviews. The listing says no marine licence is needed to drive, but the driver must be 18 or older and hold a valid driver’s licence. Rods, bait and a BBQ can be hired, a skipper is $50 an hour, and BBQ packs need 24 hours notice.

Bad Fishy Jet Boating in Cairns
My pick: The easy evening: $53, 90 minutes at sunset in Trinity Inlet, a drink and a snack included, 4.6 from 245 reviews.

Cairns Boat Hire
My pick: A group boat you drive yourself: $172 for up to 8 people, no marine licence needed according to the listing.
On a Cairns boat tour on the inlet you see the skyline framed by mangroves and mountains, plus the wildlife the listings promise: birds, fish and, on some cruises, saltwater crocodiles. On the reef cruises you see the outer reef, with the sites named in the listings: Upolu Reef and Upolu Cay, with the Wonder Wall and Aquarium sites, or Norman, Saxon and Hastings reefs for Divers Den. The infographic below follows the hotel pick-up points of the City Sights and Dinner Cruise tour, so it shows where that day starts.

Stops on the route
The Marlin Marina sits just 0.19 km from The Pier shopping centre and 0.34 km from the Esplanade Lagoon, so you can add a swim or a coffee before or after a trip. For the reef itself, the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority is the official source, and the Green zones in the Ocean Free listing are part of its zoning.
Boat tours in Cairns leave from a very small area, which makes Cairns boat tours easy to combine. The Cairns Marlin Marina, the Reef Fleet Terminal and the finger piers (A, B and D) are all within about 150 metres of each other, and the Pier shopping centre is 0.19 km away on foot. The Spirit of Cairns dinner boat is a short walk further along the waterfront, about 0.29 km from the marina. Kuranda is the exception: its riverboat leaves from the Kuranda jetty, well inland.

Most visitors ask about stingers before they ask about the price of Cairns boat tours. The Queensland Government dates the marine stinger season as November to May, and says that stingers are present in tropical Queensland waters all year; see its page on dangerous marine life. It lists box jellyfish and Irukandji as the species of concern and recommends a full-body lycra suit. Today is mid October, so a trip you book now may run in or near the season.
What the listings for these boat tours in Cairns say is more specific. Reef Adventures lists stinger suits as included in season, Ocean Free lists lycra suits and seasonal wetsuits, and Divers Den lists wetsuits and lycra suits. I cannot see what each operator supplies on a given date, so I’d ask before paying. The Green zones that the Ocean Free listing mentions are part of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, and the park authority publishes the rules on its site.
Six trip types have their own page: fishing charter, snorkeling tour, boat rental, dinner cruise, sunset cruise and river cruise. I found no dedicated dolphin-watching, yacht or jet-boat listing among my 14 Cairns boat tours, so those searches are not covered here. The table gives the starting price of each type of boat tour in Cairns from my list.
| Type | Price from | Typical duration | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Snorkeling tour | $124 | 4 to 8.5 hours | First-time reef visitors and families who swim |
| Fishing charter | $104 | 4.5 to 9 hours | Anglers, estuary or reef |
| Boat rental | $131 | 4 to 8 hours | Groups who want to drive their own boat |
| Dinner cruise | $100 | 2.5 to 9 hours | Couples and an evening with a buffet |
| Sunset cruise | $53 | 1.5 to 3 hours | A cheap, short evening on the inlet |
| River cruise | $21 | 45 minutes to 1.5 hours | Wildlife and mangroves without a long day |
Cairns boat tours look similar in photos, so I use five questions to separate them.
Whichever boat tour in Cairns you choose, book a free-cancellation option and ask your operator what stinger protection they supply. For the detail, read my pages on snorkeling in Cairns and river cruises in Cairns, or go back to my home page for other cities.

In my list a 45-minute riverboat cruise at Kuranda costs $21, and the Trinity Inlet cruises cost $44 to $96. A half-day reef snorkel is $124, full-day reef trips are $176 and $200, and fishing charters run from $104 for the estuary to $273 for the reef. Boat hire starts at $131. Prices are in US dollars.
For most visitors I'd book a Great Barrier Reef day: the Ocean Free and Ocean Freedom cruise at $200, rated 4.8 from 1,633 reviews, or the half-day Reef Adventures snorkel at $124, rated 4.7 from 1,984. If you only want an easy evening on the water, the 90-minute Bad Fishy sunset inlet cruise at $53 is my pick.
The Queensland Government dates the marine stinger season as November to May, and says stingers are present in tropical Queensland waters all year. Several reef listings I compared include stinger suits, and the half-day Reef Adventures tour says suits are provided in season. Check with your operator what they supply on your date.
The listings I compared place saltwater crocodiles in the creeks and mangroves of Trinity Inlet, not on the reef. The 75-minute Bad Fishy inlet cruise mentions them, and the Mandingalbay sunset cruise includes spotlighting for crocodiles after dark, which it says is more active in the summer months.
All 14 listings I compared say you can cancel up to 24 hours before the start for a full refund, except the City Sights and Dinner Cruise tour, which asks for two days. This is the booking-platform text, so I'd still read the policy on the page of the trip you choose, especially for weather-dependent reef days.
Most leave from the Cairns Marlin Marina or the Reef Fleet Terminal beside it: the reef cruises, the dinner cruise, the Bad Fishy inlet cruises and the boat hire. The Mandingalbay sunset cruise meets near the Pier Point Road shops, the reef fishing charter checks in at The Pier Cafe, and the riverboat leaves from Kuranda.
It depends on the trip. The half-day Reef Adventures snorkel lists non-swimmers among people it is not suitable for. The Ocean Free cruise lists flotation devices and a glass bottom boat, which gives a dry view of the reef subject to sea conditions. Ask the operator about your group before you book.
